Dominelli Carnevale-Body Painting

Cara Yeates is reporting for City Lights at the Italian Cultural Centre, for the 14th annual Carnevale Body Art Competition. Over 500 people attended this gala as a fundraiser for the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund. A night to bring awareness to all things skin!

Rita Dominelli, founder of the Dominelli Carnevale says, “what we do is make sure that everyone enjoys the evening and sees the creation of this beautiful work of art on the human canvas. The inspiration was ‘how do i promote esthetics?’ so I extracted the smallest technique from my industry, which is make-up artistry, and expanded on that because it’s very visual. ” And the effect is stunning. With this year’s theme being the world, the artists had to encorporate five elements of any chosen country into their work.  “If one gets Italy, what is Italy known about? The Lamborghini, the gondola, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, all of those things, so they have to bring five of those elements to the body, that is how the judge judges…”

With an hour of entertainment (from all over the world), different dancers, and a lot of food, which is Italian, a lot of good wine, locally produced, it is an event that brings all the artisans together. Every year the Dominelli Carnevale raises money for a different charity, and for 2008, with the Burn Fund, it was a perfect opportunity to amalgamate the art with the cause. David Dales, of the BC Burn Fund explains, “the Domenilli Group thought it would be kinda neat to compare what we do to…the event here with the beautiful models and their paintings, decoration, hair dos and the whole bit.” And the effect is stunning.
