Taste of Yaletown

Foodies unite for a Taste of Yaletown! Victoria Bidewell takes City Lights on a tour through the culinary extravaganza that is a Taste of Yaletown, presented by American Express. In this 2007 coverage of the 3rd annual event which ran from Oct. 12-28, Executive Chef and Owner Neil Wyles of the Hamilton Street Grill, one of the creators of Taste of Yaletown, talks to us about the inception of this gastronomic event. When speaking with Peter Girges of Glowbal Restaurant Group one evening, the idea of having a few back and forth parties between restaurants grew into the idea of a dining event.

With the view of neighbouring restaurants as friends and not competitors, and a goal of increasing community and establishing dining diversity, the event has grown steadily over the past three years, and keeps many diners coming back for more, according to Wayne Carson, a partner of Coast Restaurant.

Over twenty of Yaletown’s best restaurants, with an option of three set menus of $25, $35, $45, participate in this annual event. Donations from the proceeds are made to the Greater Vancouver Foodbank, and in the 3rd annual event for example, the Hamilton Street Grill donated 10% of earnings from their Saturday night of the event, one of the busiest nights, while American Express matched up to $15,000 to anyone who used their American Express card to pay for their meal.

The 4th annual Taste of Yaletown takes place between Oct. 14-26, 2008. Visit www.tasteofyaletown.com for more information and a complete list of participating restaurants.
